Review
Sea Salt Caramel Gelato: This ice cream pint had two bases side-by-side. A superior design—making it easy to get a separate, distinct taste of each base. The caramel half—which the label touts as being made with dulce de leche—was smooth, rich, and bold, so bold as to be decadent. It had a strong caramel flavor that persisted throughout the whole pint, standing up against the flavors of the pint. It was the best element of this pint by far.
Salted Pretzel Gelato: The salted pretzel half was a plain cream-flavored base with ground pretzel crumbs mixed throughout. The texture wasn’t quite as smooth and dense as the caramel half. If there was salt on the pretzel pieces, I couldn’t taste it. Maybe there was salt on the pretzels originally, but it dissolved into the base. The ground pretzel pieces weren’t quite wet, but weren’t really crunchy either—not a texture I enjoyed. Larger pretzel pieces with more salt would’ve made for a better, bolder second base.
Blondie Pieces: This mix-in tasted morelike blondie dough or undercooked blondie than blondie pieces. The texture was wet and soft—globs of dough. Still, they had a blondie flavor. It worked well against the caramel note. They were medium to large globs of blondie dough, about six chunks in my half of the pint.
Overall: Talenti’s Caramel Pretzel Blondie has much to recommend it. The pint description reads: “Pairing of sea salt caramel gelato made with dulce de leche and salted pretzel gelato with blondie pieces”
I loved the caramel gelato in this pint. It’s decadent, addictive stuff—so rich and creamy with a big, bold caramel flavor.
The salted pretzel half was too bland—a sweet cream gelato with small pretzel crumbs swirled throughout. But the pretzels were soft, not crunchy. And I couldn’t taste much salt from them. Bigger, crunchier, saltier pretzels would’ve helped this flavor stand up against the strong caramel notes of the other base.
The blondie pieces tasted wet like dough, not fully cooked blondie pieces. I would have enjoyed the texture and flavor cooked blondies more. But blondie dough still worked well as a distinct sweet note against the dominante caramel base. Pretty good, tasty, but room for improvement. 7.5/10.
