“Pint” Size: Remember when ice cream pints were 16 ounces? Well, grandpa and grandma, those were the days. Today we live in the “shrink-flation” reality. In this brave new world, a Talenti Chocolate Pretzel “pint” is only 10.9 ounces, and others in the Gelato Layers line are as small as 10.3 ounces. Yes, yes–mix-ins cost more. But we’re paying $6 for this “pint”! Way to make us feel cheated before we taste a spoonful, Talenti.

Salted Pretzel Gelato: There’s a subtle taste of pretzels from the tiny pretzel bits thoroughly blended into the creamy base. Mildly sweet, somewhat salty, but not too salty. A pleasant if mild first taste for Team Salty and Sweet. It could have been bolder with larger chunks of pretzels, more salt, more sugar. But whether this pint succeeds will be determined by the mix-ins, not this mild top base.

Chocolatey Waffle Cone Pieces: The waffle cone pieces immediately add some flavor and texture. Crunchy and very chocolatey. I basically inhaled this layer of the pint. I didn’t pause to look at it carefully, to tell whether the waffle cone pieces were infused with chocolate or covered in chocolate—which is telltale sign of a great mix-in. A few cone pieces were a bit soft, but most were firm and added crunch. For a change, there was a generous amount of this mix-in all across the pint. Often, with other Gelato Layers pints, I’ve noticed the mix-ins only extend around the pint edges, not across the center. So I was delighted by the generous amount of this waffle cone mix-in.

Salted Pretzel Sauce: “Sauce” implies some liquid quality. But this layer tasted more like a somewhat dry paste—crushed pretzels in a soft, pliable medium, dry and surprisingly salty. It brought both flavor and texture to the pint. Unfortunately, this layer was just a ring around the outside of the pint, visible from the clear pint exterior, but not present across the middle. I enjoyed this layer the most. It was the boldest element of the pint, and the combination of chocolate waffle cone and salted pretzel was great. I want to get the pint again just to experience that taste combination all over again. Maybe there’s an argument that much more salted pretzel would be too much saltiness.

Vanilla Gelato: A generic vanilla flavor. Good quality, sweet, creamy, smooth, fine. An inexpensive filler layer, and a mild contrast to the bolder salty and chocolate flavors.

Chocolate Chunks: A bottom layer of small, crisp chocolate flakes or shavings, not really chunks; still, more substantial than some ganache-style chocolate pieces found in ice cream pints of late. From the picture, you can see that about one-third of the bottom layer was missing the chocolate flakes entirely, which was disappointing. It was good quality, mild chocolate, more milk or bittersweet than dark. It added some crunchy texture if you chewed it rather than letting it melting in your mouth. A nice finish to an inspired layered pint.

Overall: Talenti Chocolate Pretzel is an easy win for Team Salty and Sweet. Plentiful mix-ins make this 10.9 oz “pint” shine—chocolate waffle cone pieces, pretzel “sauce”, chocolate flakes. The mix-in ratio was more generous and flavorful than that found in many other pints in the Gelato Layers line. But I was occasionally disappointed when a mix-in was only present on the edges of the pint but absent across the center–see the bottom of the pint picture for a visual. Still, there was a delightful mix of salty, sweet, and crunchy in this pint. Yes, the vanilla gelato layer is bland filler, and a 10.9 oz. pint is not a 16 oz. pint. But if you are member of Team Salty and Sweet–and I am–then buy this pint now, and repeatedly thereafter. No regrets. 8/10.
