Description from Walmart Website: “…nothing makes us happier than this Blood Orange Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Because this sweet cream ice cream doesn’t feature swirls of regular orange, it features swirls of blood orange, which everyone knows is the cool orange. And only the cool oranges are accompanied by dark chocolate chips.”
This was a limited edition flavor available only at Walmart in Spring 2023.
Sweet Cream Base: Rich and creamy with a sweet, dairy flavor. Not overly sweet. An enjoyable blank canvas base.
Blood Orange Swirl: The blood orange swirl is very flavorful. Even a small bit flavors a whole spoonful of base. It has a deep, citrusy flavor. I can’t speak to whether it’s an accurate blood orange flavor or not. I’m just not familiar with what a blood orange tastes like.
It’s not icy at all, which can sometimes be a problem with fruit mix-ins. It’s got the texture of jam or preserves. There’s a moderate amount, sufficient.
Chocolate Chips: Small to medium-sized irregular chocolate chunks. A little darker than milk chocolate. The pint description suggests they are in fact dark chocolate. But the taste is closer to bittersweet chocolate. There is a moderate amount. It’s a higher quality chocolate than the ganache-type that often gets included in premium ice creams.
Overall: Van Leeuwen’s Blood Orange Chocolate Chip is a pleasant flavor for a warm day. The base is nice and creamy. And the flavors—orange and chocolate—play together well. Increasing the amount of the chocolate chips and blood orange swirl would’ve leveled up this pint considerably, however.
