Ice Cream Review Van Leeuwen Campfire S'mores

Review

Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream: Creamy, sweet. Not very dense. It melts quickly. If there’s toasted marshmallow flavor, it’s subtle, easily overwhelmed by the generous fudge swirls.

Chocolate Fudge Swirls: The fudge swirls are a thicker version of Hershey’s chocolate syrup, perhaps with a slightly more intense flavor. Enough swirl that I taste some on every spoon. A strong chocolate flavor—even a small amount flavors the entire spoon, overwhelming other more subtle flavors. A common problem with chocolate competing against other flavors.

Graham Cookies: Small graham cookie bits are well distributed throughout the pint. The taste and texture is there—graham crackers. But a few larger graham cookie chunks would have conveyed the s’mores pint flavor more effectively. Pretty good as is though because there are plenty of those little cookie bits everywhere. VL seems to have got its manufacturing process down for these less expensive Walmart pints so that a solid product lands in the freezer case despite the $4.98 price point.

Marshmallows: Six or more mini-marshmallows in my half of the pint. They have a remarkable texture for a frozen marshmallow—very soft, light, fluffy, not at all stale or hard or crunchy. A solid s’mores flavor mix-in plentiful enough that I get the flavor vibe.

Overall: Van Leeuwen Campfire S’mores is a pretty darn good s’more flavor with a few unusual mix-ins. The base is supposed to be toasted marshmallow. There have been several of these toasted marshmallow s’mores pints lately. But in this VL pint, as in many of the others, I can’t taste the marshmallow let alone toasted marshmallow. I taste a sweet—very sweet—base; that’s it. Part of the problem here may be the fudge swirl that’s bold enough to overwhelm a subtle marshmallow flavor. The fudge swirl is everywhere in the pint, and it’ also pretty good; if not premium quality, it’s at least thicker and more flavorful than a basic Hershey’s chocolate syrup.

Chocolate chunks may have served better to carry forward the s’mores theme, but I think the thick chocolate syrup was acceptable, giving the sense of a melted chocolate one associates with s’mores. The mini-marshmallow mix-ins stay soft and puffy despite being frozen, again reinforcing the theme here. Finally, the graham cracker cookie bits also keep the s’mores theme going with great graham cracker flavor and texture, but larger chunks of graham cracker would’ve been ideal, even bolder in flavor and texture. Generally high quality, enjoyable, and a good value at $4.98 at Walmart. 7/10.
