Ice Cream Review Van Leeuwen Espresso Fior Di Latte Chip

Review

Espresso Ice Cream Swirled With Fior Di Latte Ice Cream: I googled “fior di latte” because there are gaps in my education and I’m not well-traveled. “Fior di latte” is Italian for “flower of milk.” It has two definitions. First, it refers to any product made from the highest quality cow’s milk. Secondarily, it is a type of gelato typically made from only dairy, sugar, and starch; in its purest interpretation, it does NOT include eggs, fruit, chocolate, or even vanilla.

This base consists of a swirl of espresso and plain sweet cream (fior di latte) ice creams. Both are thick, rich, and creamy—premium quality.

The espresso base has a strong but not bitter flavor, likely from the inclusion of cold brew coffee. Cold brew tends to result in a bold but smooth coffee flavor, less bitter, even silky, and that’s evident here.

The fior di latte portion of the base is lighter in color with a clean, milky flavor that’s refreshing and enjoyable. It’s a nice contrast against the espresso base. I can easily mix the two on my spoon and adjust the amount of coffee flavor.

Chocolate Chips: These are more irregular chunks than a standardized chip. Some are quite small, just shards or flakes of chocolate. A ganache-type chocolate chips—solid, crunch, resistant to melting in the mouth. They taste darker than milk chocolate, not as sweet as milk chocolate, but without a bitter flavor. A moderate amount of chocolate is distributed throughout the sweet cream side of the base, none in the espresso for some reason.

Graham Cookies: I wouldn’t call these graham cookies. There’s no crunch to them. They appear to be small balls of graham cracker paste. There are also some smaller bits of soft graham cracker crumbs. Perhaps these were cookies originally, but they got wet in the base, and that softened them. They weren’t unpleasant, didn’t seem soggy, just soft, with the texture of loose cookie dough. They have the flavor of graham crackers, and I appreciate how that mixes up this pint.

Overall: Van Leeuwen’s Fior di Latte Chip is an enjoyable oddball pint.

It has a swirl of espresso and sweet cream ice creams. The combination lets you adjust the amount of coffee flavor—a mix your own latte so to speak.

The chocolate chunks are a nice touch—crispy and irregular in size. But if this is a latte, why are there chocolate chips in it?

And even more confused as to what graham cookies—balls of flavorful graham crumbs—are doing in my latte exactly. I enjoy them, yes, even though they are soft, not crispy or crunchy like a cookie should be.

But the elements of this pint leave me with questions. Are graham cookies something that is typically consumed with an espresso latte in Italy? What is the intent of this pint? It’s enjoyable, but I don’t understand what all these elements are supposed to add up to—espresso, premium plain sweet cream, chocolate chunks, graham cracker cookies. A latte with a cookie on the side? 7.5/10.
