Cheesecake Base: The standard, ultra-premium quality ice cream base from Van Leeuwen—dense, creamy, luxurious—a step above Ben & Jerry’s or Haagen-Dazs. The base is well-separated from the jam swirl, easy to isolate on a spoon. The first taste is mildly sweet, then finishes slightly sour, with a hint of cream cheese and custard; a good but subtle cheesecake base. Van Leeuwen uses twice as many eggs as any competitor and it really improves their base. From the first taste, the quality really shines through.

Marionberry Jam: A generous dollop of swirl tops the pint. But digging down, only small to medium swirls of marionberry jam are actually spread throughout the pint. It’s fruity and tart—an intense, distinctive flavor. The texture is like jam, perhaps a little thinner, and not at all icy. The jam swirl is fairly sparse. But, fortunately, a little goes a long way—it has a concentrated flavor. I have no complaints about the amount of this mix-in because a little swirl of intense jam flavors a whole spoonful of base.

Graham Crumble: Small graham crumbs are spread throughout the base, with a few medium-sized crumble chunks. They’re soft, but not soggy, and add some welcome graham flavor and texture. Unfortunately, there’s just not enough graham crumble. More—and larger—graham crumbles would’ve leveled this pint up. The tiny specks of graham crumb don’t add much flavor, just texture. For me, the price tag—$7 per pint—creates a certain expectation as to mix-in size and distribution which this graham crumble didn’t quite meet. Premium price should mean generous mix-in distribution, unless the mix-in is so flavorful that it must be portioned more strategically. I can justify the limited amount of marionberry jam swirl in this pint, but not the lack graham crumble.

Overall: Van Leeuwen Marionberry Cheesecake is an enjoyable, refreshing take on a cheesecake pint. It has an excellent, luxurious base with subtle notes of custard and tart cream cheese, the right amount of intensely flavorful marionberry swirl, and many tiny graham cracker crumbs throughout, with only a very few larger graham crumble chunks. More of the larger graham cracker chunks would improve this pint and help justify the $7 pint price. But it’s still worth a taste if you are a fan of cheesecake ice cream flavors. 7/10.

Ever since 2008, when Van Leeuwen was born out of a yellow truck on the streets of NYC, we’ve been making good ice cream from good ingredients that makes you feel good.

After all, happiness is healthiness.

And nothing makes us happier than this Marionberry Cheesecake Ice Cream. If you’re going to go all the way to the freezer for this, the least we could do is make our graham crumble in-house and go to Stahlbush Island Farms for the marionberries that we use to make the jam.
