Review

Peanut Butter Ice Cream: A thick custard base with a mild peanut butter flavor. Smooth, fairly dense, not overly sweet.

Chewy Brownie Chunks: Medium-sized brownie chunks. Soft but cakey, somewhat dry—not fudgy, nor soggy. I prefer fudgy brownies, but these were a quality mix-in. The brownie chunks dissolved quickly in my mouth with a burst of mild chocolate flavor. A fair amount of them—about five chunks or so in a half pint.

Dark Chocolate Chips: Lots of chocolate chips in this pint, some on every spoonful. Irregularly shaped chips. Many small slivers, several larger chunks a half inch long, and sometimes there were more chocolate chips than ice cream base on my spoon. A generous amount of them, yes indeed. The chips were as advertised—on the dark side. A hard chocolate that didn’t melt quickly on my tongue. Crunchy chips if you choose not to savor them. The dark chocolate was an effective contrast against the base and swirl peanut butter flavors.

Peanut Butter Swirls: Thick, generous swirls of peanut butter that melt readily on my tongue. The swirls add flavor and texture, a stronger peanut butter flavor against the milder base note. Some big pockets of swirl in this pint, in the middle and bottom. Fun to scoop out. It’s that fun gambling feeling I get eating a pint of Graeter’s—what will the next spoonful turn up? A big chunk of peanut butter swirl or dark chocolate?

Overall: Van Leeuwen Peanut Butter Brownie Chip dials in the mix-in levels just right. Tons of dark chocolate chips, little chocolate flakes everywhere, and even some biggie-sized chunks half an inch long, which reminded me of Graeter’s—one of my faves. There were also plenty of brownies chunks, the cakey-type, but remarkably preserved, not soggy one bit. Add in crazy big peanut butter swirls and—whoa—there was a lot going on in this pint. The mild peanut butter base was that stellar custardy delight that Van Leeuwen always has locked down. This pint was pretty great. Recommended. 9/10.
