Ice Cream Review Van Leeuwen Planet Earth

Review

Blue Spirulina Almond Ice Cream: The light blue base is a visual reference to the oceans of planet Earth. Spirulina is a mostly flavorless blue-green algae used for coloring this pint. But this pint does have a strong flavor—almond. It’s a pleasant surprise and helps elevate this pint over what it might have been with a simple default sweet cream or vanilla base. The ice cream texture itself is creamy, smooth, rich—standard Van Leeuwen.

Matcha Green Tea Cake Chunks: The matcha cake chunks are a visual reference to the land masses of the planet Earth. The cake chunks are plentiful and well-distributed throughout as you can see from the pictures. Cake chunks on every spoon—a perfect amount. Sizes vary—small crumbs to large chunks. The cake is denser than a typical sponge cake. Generally soft, but not soggy. Not overly sweet either—a mild matcha flavor, if any.

Overall: Van Leeuwen’s Planet Earth is a delightful pint that exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a gimmick pint—a pint that isn’t flavorful or loaded with mix-ins but that references something else. The pint visually references our home planet as viewed from space—a blue-ocean-colored ice cream base (thanks to the inclusion of flavorless spirulina and blue raspberry extract) and green-land-mass-colored matcha cake chunks.

But this pint succeeds beyond the visual gimmickry in two simple ways—the base is boldly flavored with almond extract and the cake chunks are plentiful and distributed everywhere throughout the pint. Most bases tend to be a bland, blank canvas with the mix-ins providing most of the flavor and texture. But the almond really pops in this pint, and made me wonder why more pints don’t have an almond-flavored base. It really elevates the pint. The generous mix-in ratio gets no complaints from me either—this is the right amount of mix-ins for a premium pint. Expectations exceeded, therefore recommended. 8/10.

Back blurb

Ever since 2008, when Van Leeuwen was born out of a yellow truck on the streets of NYC, we’ve been making good ice cream from good ingredients that makes you feel good.

After all, happiness is healthiness.

And nothing makes us happier than this Planet Earth ice cream. Nothing on Earth. Wait, what? Anyway, this flavor is really out of this world. Well, not technically because it’s Planet Earth but, flavor wise, it’s otherworldly because of the blue spirulina almond ice cream and pieces of matcha green tea cake. Nothing on Planet Earth is better.
