Ice Cream Review Van Leeuwen Red Velvet

Review

This is a spring 2023 limited edition ice cream flavor available only at Walmart.

Cream Cheese Base: The base is relatively creamy. I’m not getting much cream cheese flavor from the base, just a generic dairy note. The texture is disappointing—airy, a bit icy. Not up to the standards I expect from Van Leeuwen which previously had a rich, premium base.

Brownie Chunks: These are soft, gobs of chocolate brownie. Fudgy, like undercooked brownie pieces, and I mean that in a good way. A good quality mix in. Medium to large sized chunks. Pliable, not frozen at all. A good amount. The several delightful big globs.

Overall: For some people, red velvet cake is nearly a holy sacrament. But not for me. To me, it’s just a mild cocoa-flavored cake with red dye and cream cheese frosting.

But Van Leeuwen’s Red Velvet seems haphazard, even to a red velvet agnostic like myself. I can’t taste any cream cheese in the base. And the base doesn’t seem as rich and custardy as in the past. The brownies taste good—but red velvet suggests cake, not brownies. This pint really wasn’t trying that hard to be red velvet. I need some cocoa cake and actual cream cheese icing for that red velvet vibe.

Score: 7/10

Back blurb

Ever since 2008, when Van Leeuwen was born out of a yellow truck on the streets of NYC, we’ve been making good ice cream from good ingredients that makes you feel good. After all, happiness is healthiness.

And nothing makes us happier than this Red Velvet ice cream. You can eat this on the couch, you can eat this as you crouch, you can eat this while you carry a pouch. You can eat this anywhere because it has red cream cheese ice cream and brownies.
