Ice Cream Review Van Leeuwen Royal Wedding Cake

Review

Sweet Cream Cheese Ice Cream: The texture of the base is creamy and smooth. The flavor: lemon cream cheese. It’s not too sweet. There’s a subtle lemon, without a concentrated fruit flavor, so no sourness. The cream cheese is fairly mild as well—not aggressively tangy. The effect is refreshing and summery. A few air pockets were visible in the base on the top and bottom of the pint as you can see from the pictures. Perhaps that was a manufacturing issue.

Lemon Sponge Cake Chunks & Elderflower Frosting: Medium to large cubes of cake pieces well-distributed everywhere throughout the pint, some on most every spoonful. The cake pieces have a subtle lemony flavor, but otherwise are a bit bland. These are soft and dry cake pieces, not soggy. Elderflower frosting? I couldn’t find any. Perhaps it dissolved into the base or maybe this is a manufacturing flaw. An extra hit of sweetness from the frosting would’ve been a nice change of pace for this pint, but it was missing from my pint.

Overall: Van Leeuwen’s Royal Wedding Cake is a nice pint find and worth a taste considering it’s available at Walmart for $4.98. Van Leeuwen describes the flavor as “Floral, sweet cream cheese ice cream. Chunks of lemon sponge cake layered with elderflower frosting.” The ingredients include geranium water and orange blossom water. But I couldn’t taste those flavors. I tasted a refreshing, summery, lemon-cream cheese base and plentiful lemon cake pieces.

Expect restrained flavors: mild lemon and mild tanginess from the cream cheese. The cake chunks are dry, soft, a bit bland. But there are plenty of them—a warm carb hug. No complaints about the amount of cake mix-ins here. However, I couldn’t taste or see any elderflower frosting—and that flavor variety might have improved this pint. Frosting can sometimes be a problematic mix-in because it may dissolve into the base. As it is, I tasted lemon-cream cheese ice cream and lemon cake, which is good because I love lemony flavors. But the result is a bit of a one note flavor. Restrained, like a royal wedding. 7/10.

Ever since 2008, when Van Leeuwen was born out of a yellow truck on the streets of NYC, we’ve been making good ice cream from good ingredients that makes you feel good.

After all, happiness is healthiness.

And nothing makes us happier than this Royal Wedding Cake Ice Cream. Inspired by the cake served at a certain royal wedding in 2018, this is the closest you’ll get (and they’ll get) to feeling like a royal. Floral, sweet cream cheese ice cream with chunks of lemon sponge cake with layers elderflower frosting. Is it appropriate to bow or curtsy? We always forget.
