Ice Cream Review Van Leeuwen Strawberry Shortcake

Review

Description from Walmart Website: “…nothing makes us happier than this Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream. The goodness in this flavor includes cold-ground vanilla, jam from Oregon-grown strawberries, and pieces of shortcake. And when there’s this much goodness, it’s good for you. Probably.”

This was a Limited Edition spring 2023 seasonal flavor available only at Walmart.

Vanilla-Strawberry Base: The base is sweet and creamy. It has a strawberry flavor with a hint of vanilla. The flavors are subtle. You can detect the strawberry but it’s not super strong. The texture is smooth and rich. I didn’t detect any iciness which you get sometimes with the fruit-flavored bases. A nice, enjoyable, quality base.

Perhaps this was originally intended as vanilla base with a strawberry jam swirl. But, if so, the swirl has dissolved into the base entirely. The end result is pleasant enough, but a thicker jam swirl might survive the rigors of stocking on Walmart shelves.

Shortcake Pieces: These are soft and a bit gooey. I’m not sure if it’s undercooked or soggy from the base, but if I had to guess I’d say it’s undercooked a bit. The flavor is that of generic cake flavor—consistent with most shortcake, so that’s not necessarily a criticism.

The cake pieces are mostly medium-sized, though I did get one larger chunk.

There are a moderate amount of chunks. Not enough for every spoonful, but I kept finding pieces as I worked through my serving.

Overall: The total effect of this pint is blander than I hoped.

The shortcake chunks are fine, and their amount is sufficient. But they don’t add much flavor. But that’s shortcake for you, I suppose.

And while the base is good quality, a stronger strawberry flavor would’ve made this more enjoyable. There are a couple fixes. Incorporating freeze-dried strawberries into the base would really intensify the flavor. Another option: adding a thick strawberry jam swirl that won’t dissolve away into the base.

Score: 7.5/10
