Review
Sweet Cream Base: A rich, dense, velvety smooth, mildly sweet ice cream base. Van Leeuwen claims to use twice as many eggs in its base as other ice creams, and it really ups the quality—the creaminess. Perhaps we’re imagining a taste of custard in the background, but if so, it doesn’t detract in any way. This base is delicious—lick-the-ice-cream-bowl-clean delicious. It’s a surprisingly refreshing, super premium base to build a pint upon.
Chopped Praline Pecans: Candy coated pecans—meaning sugar-coated—very finely chopped. They’re delightful when found. There’s just not that many of them though, and the few scattered in the pint are quite small. We love praline pecans, but the mix-in portion here seemed like it was carefully portioned out by Scrooge and Marley, Chartered Accountants, rather than a generous chef trying to delight a customer.
Brown Butter Cake Chunks: The cake is more soft and gooey gobs than chunks—somewhere between soggy cake and cake batter. Once again, just a few of these mix-ins—about 6 of them in the pint. Not overly sweet cake and if isolated on a spoon you can detect a hint of brown butter. They add some flavor and texture, but once again, we were left wanting more mix-ins from Van Leeuwen. At a premium price point and with many avid competitors scooping exotic, imaginative flavors, a brand must be generous with the mix-ins; otherwise, the customer will look elsewhere.
Overall: Van Leeuwen Praline Butter Cake has the elements of a great flavor—a nearly perfect base, and two high quality mix-ins that add flavor and texture. The praline pecans and cake gobs work well together to compliment the sweet cream base. But the fundamental flaw to this pint is the amount of mix-ins. There simply aren’t enough mix-ins to pull this flavor together. If we are paying a premium price, we expect premium quality—not to feel short-changed by the amount of mix-ins. 6/10.

Ever since 2008, when Van Leeuwen was born out of a yellow truck on the streets of NYC, we’ve been making good ice cream from good ingredients that makes you feel good.
After all, happiness is healthiness.
And nothing makes us happier than this Praline Butter Cake Ice Cream. We can thank Louisiana for the praline and Mardi Gras. But you don’t have to throw beads to get your hands on this creation; sweet cream ice cream with praline and pieces of brown butter cake.
