Disclaimer: Atomic Creamery sent me a free box of six pints to review. This is in part to promote their monthly ice cream subscription box. While the free pints provide us the opportunity for this review, Atomic Creamery has no control over the opinions contained in this review.

How the Atomic Creamery Subscription Box Works: Cherry Cordial is a limited edition flavor included in the February 2022 subscription box. How does the Atomic Creamery subscription box work? Subscribers choose four pints each month—two pints from a menu of rotating, limited edition pints available only to subscribers that month, and two pints from Atomic Creamery’s regular menu. Sweet Cream Base: This pint has a premium base—rich and creamy—a big improvement over the Atomic Creamery Red Velvet Cheesecake pint I reviewed previously. My guess is that the Red Velvet Cheesecake was either a vegan or low fat version. Regardless, this Cherry Cordial base was pleasingly decadent. It had that buttery premium base mouthfeel I adore and a mildly sweet flavor—a great foundation for most any mix-in.

Cherry Cordial Mix-in: Specifically, Trader Joe’s Cella chocolate-covered cherries. The original name of this pint referenced on Atomic Creamery’s Instagram feed was “Cherry Stracciatella”—and that original title was pretty damn accurate. There are a ton of chocolate stracciatella pieces throughout the pint of varying sizes and shapes—some more than an inch across. Perhaps these were not true stracciatella chocolate but instead crushed chocolate shell from the Cella chocolate-covered cherries. Most every spoonful had some chocolate on it—the perfect mix-in ratio. A milk chocolate, hard and crunchy. Three large chocolate chunks had half of a Cella candy with part of the cherry still inside. The cherry wasn’t icy, but any syrup from the candy was either on the top of the pint (as you can see from the photo) or, on one occasion, swirled within the pint. The cherries were candied, of the maraschino variety, but fairly rare. A few more cherries would level this pint up considerably.

Overall: Atomic Creamery Cherry Cordial is in good company with B&J’s Cherry Garcia and Graeter’s Black Cherry Chocolate Chip. It has a premium sweet cream base, decadent Cella chocolate-covered cherry mix-ins, cherry syrup from the candy that flavors the base to a certain extent, and half a ton of milk chocolate stracciatella everywhere in the pint. Perhaps that’s why Atomic Creamery called this pint “Cherry Stracciatella” on its Instagram feed rather than the name that was actually written on my pint—“Cherry Cordial.” The cherries were good—candied and therefore not at all icy. While the chocolate level was perfect, I would’ve liked more and larger cherry pieces to really stand up the cherry flavor against the generous amount of chocolate. Recommended when you’re in that chocolate and cherry mood, but really want to lean into the chocolate. 8/10.
