Ice Cream Review Caffe Panna You Win

Review

Caffe Panna’s Description: Salted milk chocolate ice cream, caramel & marshmallow swirls, Oreo brittle, Reese’s cups. Everything you always ask for. You win.

Milk Chocolate Ice Cream: There wasn’t much ice cream in this pint. The vast majority of the pint was nothing but mix-ins. Because there wasn’t enough ice cream base to isolate on a spoon, I didn’t really taste the base by itself, so I can’t give an opinion about it.

Marshmallow Swirl: Good marshmallow fluff—sweet, gooey, strong marshmallow flavor. But way too much of it. The same problem as Caffe Panna’s Graham Central Dedication. About one third of this pint is either marshmallow fluff or caramel swirl.

Caramel Swirl: Sweet, thick, flavorful caramel, but a mild flavor, though, not at all dark or burnt. Huge caramel pools on the bottom of the pint. I can’t believe I’m saying it but too much caramel.

Oreo Brittle: This tastes like crumbled Oreo cookies. I’m not sure what they mean when they call it “brittle.” Perhaps it was soaked in butter and sugar and heated and then crumbled again? I don’t know. I’d be very interested to read a recipe book from Caffe Panna. There are several big Oreo clumps in the bottom of the pint, each well over an inch in diameter—a fun way to end a pint. Plus, many thinner Oreo swirls throughout. Some swirls are crunchy, but other thinner swirls are softer, more infused with the ice cream. The Oreo brittle is addictive stuff and there’s a generous amount of it.

Reese’s Cups: These are fairly big Reese’s chunks and plenty of them are well-distributed throughout.

Overall: Caffe Panna’s You Win has all the mix-ins of a great pint—marshmallow fluff, caramel, Oreo crumbles, and chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups. But the fatal flaw here is a lack of ice cream base. There isn’t enough milk chocolate ice cream to balance out the generous amount of mix-ins. What I received is just a pint of pint of candy and cookies basically—and it’s terribly sweet because I am eating Oreos and Reese’s drenched in marshmallow fluff and caramel.

More ice cream is needed to contrast and balance out the mix-ins. This is a pretty basic and obvious manufacturing defect. Seriously, when I buy a pint of ice cream, I expect there to be some ice cream in the pint, not 90% mix-ins and 10% ice cream. Cafe Panna recently reopened after a hiatus and acknowledged manufacturing issues in an Instagram Post. They promised to address the mix-in to base ratio in future pints. It’s good that they admitted the problem and intend to resolve it, but at $18 a pint from Goldbelly, I feel quite disappointed.

The Graham Central Dedication pint I received in the same box had a similar problem—all mix-ins, little or no base. Two defective pints from a box of six is not great. I may ask for a partial refund from Goldbelly for the defective pints. Hopefully Cafe Panna will resolve this issue in the near future, because, yes, this could have been an outstanding pint. The quality is there, but the ratio of mix-ins to base is way off. 5/10.
