Review
Base: A creamy, deep purple, raspberry-flavored base with whale-sized chunks of chocolate swimming in its wondrous, mysterious depths. The raspberries have been thoroughly pureed and uniformly incorporated into the base. Neither raspberry swirls nor raspberry chunks are present, and the base works well without those elements. Not too sweet, not too tart, fruity and light, a bit summery, and very refreshing. A simply delightful base done well.
Chocolate chips: Chocolate chunks everywhere, from small flecks to gigantic irregular chunks an inch wide, some in every spoonful, a the perfect distribution. More a dark chocolate taste than a milk chocolate, it melts in the mouth. Graeter’s has nailed the perfect chocolate chip mix-in as to amount, size, and flavor.
Overall: Graeter’s signature flavor, Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip, works much like Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia. Both offer a mild fruit base contrasted against a slightly dark chocolate—an addictive combination. It might be a bit of a basic flavor—especially compared to gimmicky pints with layers, ganache toppings, or cores—but it’s executed so well that there really is nothing to do but have another spoonful at the earliest opportunity. Delicious. 8/10.
