Review

Lemon base: A light, creamy, soft base. Even fresh from the freezer, a spoon cuts through the ice cream with much greater ease than a typical premium pint. Despite the fruit flavor, there’s no iciness whatsoever. The smell of lemons starts from the first scoop from pint to bowl, before you even taste it. And then the first taste packs a wallop of lemon, daringly powerful, and not for everyone in its tartness. But the hint of buttermilk base flavor is mostly lost to the overwhelming lemon. It’s not subtle. All I taste is lemon.

Blueberry jam: Sweet blueberry jam provides a nice counterpoint to the lemon only if you can isolate the jam on your spoon; otherwise, if you mix base and jam together, lemon overwhelms and obscures blueberry. Some type of crunchy mix-in—pie crust, vanilla milk crumb, etc.—would’ve added heft and another textural dimension to the pint. Perhaps the choice was made to keep this pint light and bright, and thus to avoid incorporating a mix-in. This flavor packs about 200-400 calories less than a typical Jeni’s pint.

Overall: It’s a refreshing summer treat for the lemon lover, like a glass of the best creamed lemonade ever. But be forewarned if you don’t like lemony flavors: from the first to the last spoonful, this pint will hit you like a bag of lemons in the face.

Front Blurb

Tart and uber creamy lemon with from-scratch blueberry jam in fresh cultured buttermilk and cream.

Back Blurb

Hands down, this is one of my all-time favorite flavors. I’ve been making it since my first days selling ice cream at a farmers market in 1996, inspired by the fresh berries grown by neighborhood farms. We make it the same way we always have, with fresh cultured buttermilk for tartness, lemon juice for a bright bite, and from-scratch blueberry sauce for sweet-tart balance. Reminiscent of the best sherbet you’ve ever tasted.
