Review

Buttermilk Base: smooth, rich, creamy, and only mildly sweet so that the slightly sour and tart buttermilk can be tasted. It adds another dimension to the pint, an effective flavor contrast well-balanced against the peach swirl and biscuit chunk mix-ins.

Biscuit chunks: pleasant, chewy, crusty, occasionally quite large, perhaps somewhat bland, basically more texture than flavor. These biscuits are never too soggy—sogginess being a problem Jeni’s sometimes has with its cake chunk mix-ins. The biscuits provide a very similar taste and texture to plain pie crust pieces. In fact, tasting it, I thought it was pie crust before reading the label. The biscuits provide a nice texture change, especially when a large chunk is found. But only a moderate number of biscuit pieces are throughout the pint. More biscuit pieces, please—or perhaps instead some type of streusel or cookie crumb to add another distinct flavor element.

Peach Jam: sweet, with a mighty peach flavor. It’s a sunny taste of summer. But about half the pint did not have much peach swirl. And, unfortunately, the thicker peach swirls were a bit too icy. This can be a problem with any fruit flavor, because fruits contain a lot of water. There are several solutions to this: cooking the fruit longer to remove as much water as possible; or adding sugar, butter or other additives to the fruit swirl to prevent ice from forming. A few more swirls with less ice would have leveled up this pint.

Overall: The flavor combination works well enough if you like peaches. It’s a dessert your grandma might serve on Sunday afternoon on her porch in Georgia: sweetened buttermilk, peach jam, crusty biscuits. This one’s for the forgiving peach lover who can overlook the iciness of the peach jam.
