Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake is one of the flavors in the Talenti “Gelato Layers” line.
The package touts five layers, but there are only four elements: two layers of cheesecake gelato, one layer of chocolate flakes, one layer of black cherry sauce, and one layer of graham cracker cookie pieces.
Cheesecake Gelato: A mild cheesecake gelato with only the slightest tang and somehow a strange coconut aftertaste. It’s a somewhat light and airy base, perhaps because this is gelato, not real ice cream. It’s not the dense, thick, rich base you find in a typical pint of Jeni’s or Ben & Jerry’s. Still, it’s generally pleasant.
Chocolate Flakes: The small flakes are dark chocolate of good quality. They’re mostly found near the cherry sauce. The chocolate is a nice, bold flavor contrast against the cherry and cheesecake notes. Also, the flakes add some textural contrast. They will melt in your mouth if you want to savor them or add a bit of crunch if you choose to chomp them.
Black Cherry Sauce: Reminiscent of the cherry flavor found inside a chocolate covered cherry or a diner’s cherry pie. Only sweet notes, with little or no contrasting sour. Not Luxardo or Bada Bing level cherries here. But this cherry sauce works well enough against the chocolate flakes sprinkled nearby, adding contrasting flavor and texture. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of cherry sauce. It’s strategically distributed only as a ring of sauce along the outside wall of the pint to show through the container. But it’s not a true layer of sauce across the whole width of the pint; little or no sauce in the middle of the pint.
Graham Cookie Pieces: Soft, somewhat soggy, pellet-sized graham cookies in the very bottom of the pint to simulate a graham cracker crust. They add some texture, and a nice graham cookie flavor. But as you can clearly see from the photograph, the graham cookies are found for the most part only along the edges of the pint. This is intended to show through the container on the store shelf, to mislead the consumer as to the contents of the pint. We love you Talenti, but that’s cheating. We deserve better from such premium priced pints.
Overall: A good but not great layered pint with the flavors and textures of a slice of chocolate cherry cheesecake. We felt somewhat cheated by the placement of the mix-ins—distributed for show on the edges of the clear container, but absent across the middle of the pint. Still, if you like chocolate and cherries, this is a worth a taste. As a pint, it’s a strong contender against similar layered offerings such as Ben & Jerry’s Topped and Häagen-Dazs’s Crispy Trio Layers.
