Review
Salted Caramel Truffle is one of the flavors in the Talenti “Gelato Layers” line.
The package touts five layers, and in a rare exception to the other pints in this lineup there are indeed 5 different elements: salted caramel gelato, crunchy chocolate cookie pieces, dulce de leche, vanilla gelato, and chocolate covered caramel truffles.
Salted Caramel Gelato: A thick and creamy caramel gelato with a hint of salt and perhaps the faintest smoke flavor. A pleasant base to build the pint on, and to contrast against other layered flavors.
Chocolate Cookie Pieces: Talenti layered pints tend to include crunchy bits, and this pint is no different with its small, crispy chocolate cookie pieces. The chocolate contrasts well against the other flavors in the pint and adds welcome texture as well. But there just aren’t enough of those little cookie bits. It’s the same sin as in prior layered Talenti pints: there’s a ring of cookie bits strategically distributed along the clear outer edge of the container, but not across the width of the pint. A bit deceptive. Hey, Talenti: we see you.
Dulce de Leche: A layer of sweet caramelized milk atop the vanilla gelato. It adds richness and complexity, and was so delicious it left us wanting more. At least there was some across this entire pint layer, including some patches of a generous amount. As a rule, premium pints should be generous with their mix-ins.
Vanilla Gelato: A bland layer without a strong vanilla bean flavor. But its blandness worked well as a delivery system against the decadent dulce de leche. The other flavors in the pint were also strong, so they dominated over the bland vanilla gelato that lacked much personality of its own.
Chocolate Covered Caramel Truffles: Smallish, milk chocolate covered, melt in your mouth, caramel truffles. The best element of this pint found only at the very bottom of the container. The interior of the truffles coat your tongue with flavor: sweet, rich caramel, plus a touch of salt and smoke. You can see from the photographs that the truffles are once again arranged only along the edge of the pint to mislead the consumer, not across the entire width of the pint. Talenti could have included some more truffles, and that would have truly elevated this pint.
Overall: An enjoyable layered pint with a variety of flavors and textures, well worth a taste. Chocolate and caramel are effective contrasting flavors, and the inclusion of dulce de leche and actual caramel truffles takes this pint to the next level. There’s something delicious to be found in most every spoonful. Our biggest quibble with the Talenti Gelato Layers line is the miserly and misleading distribution of the mix-ins. A Scrooge at the Talenti corporate accounting office sorely needs an epiphany: a premium pint is generous, never stingy, with its mix-ins.
