Review
Vanilla Ice Cream Base: Van Leeuwen makes a top tier base—creamy, rich, decadent—so dense it can be difficult to scoop until it tempers. This base has three flavor notes: vanilla, custard, and Oreo-style cookie crumbs. The Tahitian vanilla bean is somewhat subtle, quickly lost against the generous amount of tiny Oreo-style cookie crumbs present throughout the pint. As always, Van Leeuwen uses a French ice cream base with double the eggs, and that’s what gives it a hint of custard, a richness that exceeds the quality of many other brands in the premium ice cream niche. It’s a base worth savoring—let it temper briefly then take it slow to really appreciate it.
Crumbled Dark Chocolate Sandwich Cookies: The mix-in here is Oreo-style cookie crumbles—chocolate cookie wafers with cream filling. We can’t determine if these are actual Oreos or even if the chocolate cookies are using black cocoa. But, if not, these are a spot on replica of Oreos. Tiny cookie crumbs are present everywhere in the pint, lending some texture and flavor, and happily enough, there are many medium size and even a few quite large cookie chunks. We taste crumbled cookies on every spoonful.
Not soggy, but not entirely crisp either—most are soft, but enjoyably so. The cookie taste does not get lost in the base, which can sometimes happen when a mix-in dissolves too much into the base. Occasionally, we find a big chunk of the frozen cookie cream filling—a nice, sweet pop when it melts your mouth.
This flavor was not as stingy with the mix-ins as some previous Van Leeuwen pints we’ve tried—for examples, see Van Leeuwen Praline Butter Cake and Van Leeuwen Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Chunk. Hopefully this trend of more generous mix-ins will continue when we sample future Van Leeuwen pints.
Overall: Van Leeuwen Cookies & Cream stands out from the competition only because of its luxurious, ultra-premium base. Otherwise, it’s a pretty standard cookies and cream flavor that everyone has tasted before. We were happy this pint had a more generous number of–and larger–mix-ins than previous pints from Van Leeuwen. It’s worth a taste for the cookies and cream fan. 7/10.
