Brown Sugar Base: A luxurious, creamy, dreamy base. The pint packaging states that due to the amount of egg yolks in the base—the back blurb reads “when you use twice as many egg yolks as standard ice cream…”—this is not mere “ice cream” as the powers that be define it, but instead “French ice cream.” The base is more beige-colored than many other bases, perhaps because of the inclusion of all those egg yolks as well as brown sugar. And the brown sugar flavor is fairly subtle—sweet but never cloying. It’s a strong, premium base to build a pint upon.

Cookie dough chunk: Small cylinders of cookie dough, about a 1/4 inch in diameter, substantial enough to really enjoy. They start frozen too solid and taste better after tempering. A generic cookie dough—without chocolate chips or any other flavorings or additions. And not a lot of them either—about 10-12 chunks well-distributed throughout the pint. They left us wanting more.

Brownie chunks: Small brownie chunks, smaller than the cookie dough. A dark chocolate flavor. Not soggy or frozen—a good fudgy brownie texture. No need to wait for the brownies to temper. But again, not a lot of them—about 10-12 chunks randomly placed through the pint. Again, we’d like a few more.

Walnuts: Small to medium sized walnut pieces. They add a slightly bitter walnut flavor, a pleasant contrast against all the sweet flavors. The package says these are candied walnuts, but with so many sweet flavors in the pint I couldn’t tell. The walnuts provide welcome texture and flavor variety. A few more would have leveled up the pint though.

Overall: Van Leeuwen’s Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Chunk is a solid premium pint offering a variety of flavors and textures. It’s not a concept pint, not a deconstructed version of some other dessert like many other brands offer—Jeni’s Boston Cream Pie, Jeni’s Savannah Buttermint, and Haagen-Dazs White Chocolate Truffle leap to mind as examples. This pint is just a somewhat random assortment of quality mix-ins and a super-premium base—or as Van Leeuwen says on the pint “a collection of all the best stuff”. We particularly liked how the brown sugar base contrasted against the fudgy brownies. But there’s room for improvement: more mix-ins, if you please. Premium pints must always be generous with the mix-ins, never stingy.
